3.45 million Muslims were living in the U.S. in 2017, according to the resent estimates of Pew Research, a nonpartisan American think tank headquartered in Washington. D.C. and which provides information on social issues, public opinion and demographic trends. The institution states through an article released on Wednesday, 3rd of January, and published on its official website that American Muslims account for almost 1.1 % of the U.S. total population.
Based o a number its own demographic survey and other sources, Pew Research indicates that compared the Jewish communities in the American country, the size of Americans identifying themselves as Muslim is very small. However, this minority is expected to grow throughout the years. According to the agency, estimates suggest that by 2040 will replace Jews as the «nation’s second largest religious group after Christians».
More than that, Pew Research’s forecasting shows that in 2050, 33 years from now, American Muslims in the U.S.A. will reach 8.1 million which accounts approximately for 2.1% of the country’s total population. The latter is almost twice the figure estimated today.
A number expected to grow
Always while depending on the 2017 survey of the U.S Muslims and the statistics made public by the official Census Bureau, the same source gives more details about the Muslim population in the U.S. In fact, Muslims are mostly residing in Metro cities such as Washington. D.C. where sizable communities are based. For example, New Jersey and other states are hosting «two or three times as many Muslim adults per capita as the national average», explains the think tank.
On the other hand, Pew Research indicates that the number of American Muslims has significantly grown through the years after a dramatic drop. Talking numbers, in 2007 2.35 million Muslims were living in the U.S.A. «The Muslim population has continued to grow at a rate of roughly 100,000 per year, driven both by higher fertility rates among Muslim Americans as well as the continued migration of Muslims to the U.S.», said the American agency.
Pew Research says on the other hand that religious conversions have not largely affected the number of the American Muslim population and that is because as «about many American convert to Islam as leave the faith».
