In an interview with French-language weekly newspaper, Jeune Afrique, the Mauritanian president declared that diplomatic relations with Morocco are blowing hot and cold.

However, Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz revealed that relations between the two countries have «improved» recently. Meanwhile, he accused Mustapha Chafi Ould Lmam, one of his opponents who have been exiled in the Kingdom, of allegedly collaborating with terrorist groups operating in the Sahel.

States, he said, ask him to free their hostages kidnapped in the region, in exchange of money. A way used to finance terrorism and abduction.

Ould Abdelaziz rejoices over the departure of Bouamatou

The president recalled that his country’s justice «launched in 2011 an international arrest warrant» against the former special advisor of the former president of Burkina Faso Blaise Campaore. The president has closed any compromise door with Chafi, saying he does not «deal with terrorists».

Relations between the two men are tense. In March 2017 the opponent openly accused the president, in an interview with local media, of «dividing» Mauritanians, «weakening national cohesion» and «hijacking Mauritania».

As for the case of the businessman Mohamed Ould Bouamatou, the president was rather satisfied that his eternal opponent left Morocco.

Speaking about the Western Sahara conflict, the head of state acknowledged that the territorial dispute blocked the Maghreb integration. He urged the kingdom and the Polisario to make «sacrifices» and find a solution.

In the interview with Jeune Afrique, Ould Abdelaziz announced that he will not run for the 2019 presidential elections.
