In Spain, the first political consequences following the Court of Justice of the European Union’s ruling are showing. Thursday, at the Committee on Foreign Affairs, senates who support the Polisario met under the command of Podemos. They presented two proposals fundamentally opposed to Morocco.
The first bill requires the Rajoy government to «express its worries regarding the exploitation of the Western Sahara natural resources», carried out by companies from the European Union.
The authors of the two bills have also launched an appeal to call these companies operating in the province to «cease all their activities» that could «promote the continuation of this occupation,» said Europa Press.
The PP refuses the eruption of a diplomatic crisis
Fortunately and for the interests of Morocco, the initiative did not get the number of votes needed for its to be adopted by the upper house in the Spanish Parliament. Senators of the ruling People's Party rejected it. Indeed, the elected members of the PP enjoy a comfortable majority in the Senate. They have 148 seats compared to Socialists who occupy only 62, while the Compromis group is represented by 21 senators.
For the spokesman of the PP, the approval of such a proposal could «lead to a political crisis with Morocco that would affect mainly Spain,» he said in a speech delivered before the members of the Commission on Foreign Affairs.
As for the second proposal, also presented by the extreme left, it asks the Spanish executive to engage in finding a solution for the Western Sahara conflict. the bill hopefully was also rejected as the previous one.
To defend their decision, parliamentarians from the right pointed out that some parts in the text that refer to the region as «occupied» and «invaded» are not compatible with the official position of Spain. Recalling that Madrid pleads for a «political, just, durable and mutually acceptable solution that would be in favor of the free self-determination of the Saharawi people in accordance with the UN Charter».
