Settled down in Val-d'Oise in France, Nadia El Bouga is a French-Moroccan sexologist and trained midwife who works on changing the socially-constructed ideas about sexual life. The 40-year-old woman welcomes couples, and gives clear and realistic answers to their questions.
«I became interested in sexology when I was studying midwifery. I was brought to accompany couples expected to give birth, and realized quickly that I was actually, as a midwife, supposed to discuss the sexual life of these couples. During pregnancy these couples had questions I had to answer. These things have really made me consider working in this field», Nadia told Yabiladi.
Unconscious fear
Very quickly, Nadia who contributes to a Sexology show on Beur FM, a radio station, was confronted, through her patients, with problems related to sexual pathology, such as vaginismus. The latter refers to a woman's inability to engage in vaginal penetration, including sexual intercourse, manual penetration, insertion of tampons or menstrual cups, and the penetration involved in gynecological examinations.
«Women diagnosed with vaginismus, suffer from muscles tightening, so it is impossible for them to welcome penetration. Even when they try, they fail as their bodies are tense and so contracted, often unconsciously», she said.
With experience, Nadia El Bouga realized that some of these problems can be related to how society sees sex. «I had so many petients of Maghrebian origins. I thought these women would suffer the most from this condition, but I was wrong as French women are equally affected».
Despite the discourses and ideologies in favor of equality between men and women, reality is another thing. «As a sex therapist, I see that there is really a gap between the ideology and the realities of women. There is still in France a total inequality in sexuality conveyed through Pornography», said the therapist.
The observations of Nadia El Bouga are also confirmed in Morocco, where her aunt presides in Agadir the association Voices of Women. «When I talk to women in Morocco, the issues I see are the same as the ones I face in France. We are confronted with a sexuality where a woman are just doing their husbands a favor and meeting their demands», concluded Nadia.
