In an article published Sunday, 15th of July, Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported, quoting security sources, that «several Islamist parties in Morocco and Tunisia have asked their followers to integrate young Muslims in their trade union», in Spain.
«The call is targeting young Spanish Muslims, especially university students», says the newspaper, referring to the Justice and Development Party (PJD), Islamist association Al Adl Wal Ihsan (AWI) as well as the Ennahdha Party, also known as Tunisia’s Renaissance political party.
El Mundo has even claimed that Morocco’s PJD and AWI are willing to «export their ideas and disagreements to the European country». «A Moroccan war is about to erupt in Spain», sources told the newspaper.
To back its account, El Mundo says that the Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities (FEERI), which includes 200 associations, has held several meetings for the creation of a Muslim party, guided by Al Adl Wal ihsan. «The last meeting has reportedly been held a month ago in Barcelona», said the same source.
AWI in Spain
The Spanish media, however, indicates that FEERI acknowledges having been asked, a year ago, to «create a Muslim party» in Spain. «We have been collaborating with existing political parties, we do not have the time to create a party with these characteristics and it is easy to know who is behind these initiatives», said the federation.
«The FEERI representatives know that a similar plan has been aborted in the past with the creation of PRUNE (Renaissance Party and the Union of Spain)», says the same source. The latter is a Muslim formation that emerged in 2010 in Granada. The party was founded by Mostafa Bakkach El Aamrani, a Moroccan-Spanish writer from Tangier, who served also as a vice-president of FEERI, El Mundo recalls.
In Spain, the Muslim community is governed by two federations. Two entities that are not on good terms : The Union of Islamic Communities of Spain (UCIDE) and the Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities (FEERI).
Although the latter is composed mainly of Spaniards converted to Islam, it is currently chaired by Mounir Benjelloun, who is known as an «active member» of AWI.
In 2016, the Spanish Interior Ministry criticized FEERI for the rise of radicalism in the country, citing Al Adl Wal Ihsan.
