Rihanna faces backlash over her new Moroccan-inspired palette's advertising campaign

Barbadian singer and song-writer Rihanna has stirred controversy on social media after releasing a promotional video for her new Moroccan-inspired eyeshadow palette «Moroccan Spice», reported online newspaper Arab News on Thursday. The 30-year-old star has been slammed for not hiring a Moroccan model when advertizing for her new makeup product.

The desert-themed video was posted on the singer’s Instagram on the 6th of July, it has since then received many comments describing it as culturally insensitive.

It features several models, including the pop superstar herself posing in front of camels with an Arab-influenced music playing in the background. The five time Grammy winner has not reacted to the backlash yet.

«As someone who is half Amazigh Moroccan, I (would have hoped that) if you (were) going to have a palette inspired by — or do the shoot in — Morocco, you could have at least cast one person of Moroccan or Amazigh descent», an internet user commented on the video posed on Twitter.

«Moroccan Spice with no Moroccan models to represent it. If Rihanna was white, her brand would be tarnished from the backlash she’d receive for this Orientalist nonsense», wrote another user.

Fenty Beauty, the RnB singer’s makeup brand, was named 2017’s best innovation by Time Magazine, it promises to make all women feel included.
