Sahara : The names of officials attending the Geneva round table finally revealed

On the 5th and 6th of December, Morocco, the Polisario, Algeria and Mauritania are sending delegations to Geneva to attend a round table on the Western Sahara conflict. The names of the officials participating to the meeting have been revealed.

Invited by the UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Horst Köhler to attend a round table on the Western Sahara conflict, Morocco, the Polisario, Algeria and Mauritania will have to send delegations on the 5th and 6th of December to Geneva (Switzerland).

According to French-language magazine Jeune Afrique, Köhler sent a letter on November the 21st to the four parties participating to the meeting. In his letter, the UN diplomat indicated that each delegation must be composed of five members, including a woman, wrote Jeune Afrique on Monday.

On Tuesday, Moroccan online newspaper Le 360 revealed the names of the officials attending the Geneva meeting. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita is heading the Moroccan mission sent to Switzerland, alongside Mohamed Yassine Mansouri, the director of Morocco's external intelligence agency (DGED).

The Moroccan delegation includes also the presidents of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, and the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab one, Hamdi Ould Errachid and Ynja El Khattat respectively.

The Polisario, Algeria and Mauritania

The same source published the names of officials designated by the Polisario to take part in the round table. The «Speaker of the Polisario’s parliament» Khatri Addouh, its coordinator with the MINURSO M’Hamed Khaddad, and the secretary general of the National Union of Sahrawi Women Fatma El Mehdi are flying to Geneva in December, wrote Le 360.

Meanwhile, pro-Polisario online newspaper Futuro Sahara reported that the Front’s delegation includes two other members, namely Sidi Mohamed Omar, representative of the Polisario to the United Nations, and Mohamed Ali Zerouali, adviser to the secretariat of Front.

According to the same source, Algeria is sending its Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel alongside diplomat Abdellah Baali and Algiers representative to the United Nations Sabri Boukaddoum.

On the other hand, Mauritanian Foreign Minister Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed is the only official to represent Nouakchott in Geneva, reports Futuro-Sahara and Le 360.

For the record, when Horst Köhler called the four parties to attend a round table in Geneva, Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario and Mauritania welcomed the proposal.

Morocco’s response was made public by the Security Council’s Secretary General Antonio Guterres. On the 3rd of October, the Polisario officially announced that it is ready to parley with the other parties in Geneva.
