Despite Morocco's efforts, a Polisario delegation attends an EU-AU meeting in Brussels

Brussels is currently hosting the meeting of foreign affairs ministers of the African Union and the European Union, which is attended by a Polisario delegation. This move comes after Morocco has tried everything to ban the representatives of the separatist movement from making it to international meetings.

The European Union invited the Polisario Front to the meeting of foreign affairs ministers of the African Union and the European Union, held in Brussels from 21 to 22 January. The Moroccan delegation sent to Brussels is headed by Minister delegate in charge of African Cooperation Mohcine Jazouli.

Meanwhile, a Polisario delegation has also made it to the meeting. According to an SPS article published Monday, a Polisario delegation headed by the «Minister of Foreign Affairs», Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, has also attended the EU meeting.

The same source, which published a photo of the Polisario delegation, reported that it consists of «the delegate minister for Europe, Mohamed Sidati, Counselor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, the ambassador and permanent representative to the African Union, Lamine Baali», and several other representatives.

SPS recalled that the members of the Polisario delegation will have to hold a series of meetings with the participating delegations.

A participation that annoys Morocco

The Polisario delegation has also attended an official dinner hosted in honor of foreign affairs ministers from the two continental organizations. The dinner was co-chaired by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and the Rwandan Foreign Minister Richard Sezibera.

Speaking to Yabiladi on Tuesday, a diplomatic source explained that the Polisario delegation managed to attend the meeting in question because it is organized by the «European Union and the African Union».

«Before Morocco rejoined the African Union, the meeting was called the EU-Africa summit. Now, high-level meetings, such as this one, include the African Union as an organization and the Polisario is a member of it», the same source stressed.

In November 2017, the Front took part in the African Union-European Union Summit, organized in Côte d'Ivoire. The European Commission said then that the participation of the separatist movement in this meeting «does not change the position of the European Union on SADR».
