Moroccan national Mounir el-Motassadeq, who was sentenced in 2004 to 15 years in prison by the Hamburg court for being involved in the 9/11 attacks, received 7,000 euros when released from prison, reports EFE quoting the German weekly Der Spiegel.

According to the German newspaper, the money was transferred to the Moroccan’s account, that he opened while in prison, before being extradited to Morocco in October, 2018. According to the same source, this operation violates European regulations.

Mounir el-Motassadeq, 44, is on the list of people whose money has been frozen because of his links with the al-Qaida terrorist group.

For the record, Al-Motassadeq was convicted in Germany of helping three of the suicide pilots in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

The inmate was convicted in 2007 of «membership in a terrorist organization and accessory to murder for aiding the three hijackers who lived in Hamburg».

After being deported to his country of origin, Mounir al-Motassadeq will have to serve the rest of his sentence in Morocco.
