Trying to smuggle three living Moroccan tortoises, a German man put them in a chocolate box, reports USA Today, quoting a press release from the airport’s main office made public by the Schonefled Airport in Berlin.

The 69-year-old man, who arrived from Cairo on February the 3rd, 2019, went through customs at the airport. But custom officers realized that he had a pastry box, that contained «chocolate», as he said.

Inside the box, however, the man had three Moroccan tortoises. They were confiscated by the authorities and held under veterinarian care.

«The customs office said the species is under protection by the Washington Convention on the Protection of Animals», the same source said, adding that the man in question might be fined 50,000 euros or face a five-year sentence.
