On Monday, US President Donald Trump recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, an occupied territory seized from Syria in 1967.

Visiting the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was with Trump at the White House when he signed the proclamation.

«Today, it was my great honor to welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel back to the White House where I signed a Presidential Proclamation recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights», wrote Trump on his Twitter account, celebrating the decision.

This recognition serves Netanyahu, who is running for election next month, BBC reports. Tel Aviv annexed the territory in 1981.

Speaking about the territory, Benjamin Netanyahu said that «Israel won the Golan Heights in a just war of self-defense and the Jewish people's roots in the Golan go back thousands of years».

He referred to the six-day-war fought between 5 and 10 June 1967 by Israel and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria.
