The Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), an economic and political organization formed by Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania, hosted a seminar, Wednesday, in Tunis to present the Trans-Maghreb railway line, a project launched by the grouping.
The seminar was opened by the Secretary-General of the Arab Maghreb Union, Taïeb Baccouche. The project is based on rehabiliting and upgrading some Maghreb railway tracks. The event was attended by representatives from the African Development Bank, NEPAD, the Maghreb Bank for Investment and Foreign Trade (BMICE), international and regional banks and senior officials.
It has been discussed how this important strategic project can be financed and implemented in partnership with the public and private sectors after being adopted by the Maghreb countries.
The Trans-Maghreb railway line includes the construction of a new railways across the border between Tunisia and Algeria (Annaba-Jendouba), the upgrading of the Jendouba-Jédouba railway line and the Morocco-Fez-Oujda railway line, the Union said in a statement published Monday.
Through this project, the Union aims to establish a Maghreb economic union to manage transportation and imports in the region.
