Childern born abroad to Danish jihadists will no longer be granted Danish citizenship, AFP and Euronews report, quoting a statement released Thursday by the Scandinavian country’s immigration ministry.
«As their parents have turned their back on Denmark, there is no reason for the children to become Danish citizens», Immigration Minister Inger Stojberg announced.
The new decision was proposed by the Danish government’s minority. Before implementation, the bill will have to be passed by the parliament. «It's hard for me to believe that some parties in parliament are not willing to protect Denmark», the minister told Danish press agency Ritzau.
Reacting to the bill, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Denmark rejected the decision. UNICEF believes that Denmak would be «punishing children for their parent’s sin in its attempt to protect itself from Danish jihadists», the same source added.
Denmark had already tried 13 people for joining terrorist organizations. Nine of these former jihadists were stripped of their Danish citizenship, except the ones who did not have dual nationality.
