The Arab League rejected, Sunday, the United States’ recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. During a summit held in Tunisia, Arab leaders condemned the American decision, stressing that it is a «serious violation of the UN Charter».

Arab leaders indicated in a final statement that followed Sunday’s summit that the US decision will not change the legal status of the Syrian Golan, which Israel occupied in the 1967 war.

The summit also condemned «the measures taken by the Israeli occupation authorities in October 2018 to impose local elections in the occupied Syrian Arab Golan».

Visiting Morocco, last week, King Abdullah II of Jordan and King Mohammed VI stressed in a joint communiqué that the Golan is an occupied Syrian territory and that Israel’s decision to annex it is illegal. To the two sovereigns Israel’s decision violates UN resolutions.

For the record, US President Donald Trump recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights last week. Visiting the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was with Trump at the White House when he signed the proclamation.

«Today, it was my great honor to welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel back to the White House where I signed a Presidential Proclamation recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights», wrote Trump on his Twitter account, celebrating the decision.

Speaking about the territory, Benjamin Netanyahu said that «Israel won the Golan Heights in a just war of self-defense and the Jewish people's roots in the Golan go back thousands of years».
