President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned on Tuesday, April 02, 2019, Algerian press agency APS reports as quoted by the HuffPost Maghreb.

The Algerian president officially notified the head of the Constitutional Council of his decision to end his term as head of state, APS indicates.

Earlier today, the army had urged President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to leave office, explaining in a statement that «there is no need to waste any more time». «We believe that there is no longer any need to waste more time and that the proposed constitutional solution must be implemented immediately, namely the implementation of Articles 7, 8 and 102», the same source added.

This summation from the army, «clear and irrevocable» according to the statement, comes a day after the Presidency announced in a communique that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika would quit before the end of his term on April 28.

The Army Chief of Staff, Ahmed Gaïd Salah, had already called Tuesday, March 26, for the implementation of Article 102 of the Algerian constitution. He reiterated his call Saturday, March 30, also referring to Articles 7 and 8.

Algeria has been shaken for several weeks by popular protests denouncing Abdelaziz Bouteflika's fifth term and calling for his departure.
