British far-right groups have been banned on Facebook. The social network company announced, Thursday, that it imposed a ban on several far-right groups and individuals, believing that they «spread hate», AFP reports.

«Individuals and organizations who spread hate, or attack or call for the exclusion of others on the basis of who they are, have no place on Facebook», the social media platform said in a statement.

The ban covers the British National Party (BNP), the English Defense League (EDL) and Britain First. People who support and praise these groups on the social media platform will also be banned, the Guardian said.

British MP Yvette Cooper and chair of the Home Affairs Select committee welcomed this new decision. «For too long social media companies have been facilitating extremist and hateful content online and profiting from the poison», she told BBC.
