Moussa Faki and Antonio Guterres meet at the UN without addressing the Western Sahara issue

On Monday, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat attended the Third African Union-United Nations Annual Conference, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

During this meeting, peace, security, sustainable development and climate change were among the topics discussed by Faki Mahamat and Guterres.

In a joint communiqué, made public on the same day, the UN Secretary-General and the AU Chairperson «welcomed the strong cooperation and collaboration between the two organizations».

«They expressed their commitment to continue to deepen the strategic partnership between the two organizations in addressing peace and security issues and achieving sustainable development issues in Africa through a more integrated approach», the same communiqué stated.  

However, the meeting between the UN Secretary-General and the AU chairperson did not refer to the Western Sahara issue.
