On June 1, El Salvador elected a new president. Nayib Bukele, 37, has officially taken office as the country’s head of state. His inauguration ceremony was attended by the Polisario’s Secretary General Brahim Ghali.

San Salvador has even announced that it is «reassessing» its diplomatic relations with «SADR» and evaluating its decision on the Western Sahara conflict.

«The government of El Salvador is currently developing a new policy that aims at promoting the interests of the country internationally», the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador said on Twitter. «The government is currently evaluating its diplomatic relations with ‘SADR’», the ministry added.

The same source added that «once this phase of assessment is over, the government of Salvador will let the international community know about its decision». A message that carried the same announcement was sent the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on June 6.

For the record, El Salvador recognized «SADR» in 1989.
