While a number of elected representatives from the Sahara flew to Iceland, this week, as part of a working visit, a delegation led by president of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab regional council, Yanja El Khattat, held talks with several Irish senior officials from June 13 to 15.
The delegation met with the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Irish Parliament, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, several MPs and senators, as well as with officials of the NGO «Front Line Defenders», the Embassy of Morocco in Dublin said in a statement relayed Friday by MAP.
During this visit, the delegation highlighted «the relevance of the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco for the settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara», the same source said.
The Moroccan delegation reiterated that Morocco's proposal is «the realistic political solution that fits perfectly into the framework defined by the United Nations». They also stressed that the notion of representativeness of the Sahara populations has been «clearly and tangibly demonstrated».
The latest developments in the Sahara issue following the two round tables in Geneva were also mentioned during these talks, the embassy added.
This visit comes as a delegation that was composed of elected representatives from the Sahara headed to Iceland, where its members held talks with several senior officials.
These two visits were preceded by two others conducted by the Polisario Front. On April 3, the separatist movement’s leader Brahim Ghali was received by the Icelandic Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir.
In March, a delegation from the Tindouf camps visited the republic of Ireland and was received by its president.
In Ireland, the Polisario delegation held meetings with several Irish politicians. This visit was relayed by the Algerian press agency, creating a wave of criticism among Moroccan media platforms, which described the meeting as «fake news».
