Michigan pageant winner Kathy Zhu has been stripped of her title by the Miss World America organization for tweets she made about Muslims and black people, American press agency Associated Press (AP) reports.

Zhu was crowned the pageant's Michigan last week. But she was described by AP as «a University of Michigan conservative who's active with a group called Chinese Americans for Trump».

«It has been brought to the attention of Miss World America (MWA) that your social media accounts contain offensive, insensitive and inappropriate content», wrote MWA in an email sent to the 20-year-old student.

According to screenshots of the now-deleted tweets, Zhu had commented on an invitation to «try hijab» at the university campus in a way that was dubbed «offensive».

«So you’re telling me that it’s now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing? Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?», Zhu said in her tweet.
