Migration : 59 people of Maghrebi origin rescued in the Mediterranean

Salvamento Marítimo, the public institution in charge of maritime security in Spanish waters, announced, Saturday, that it had saved 59 people of Maghrebi origin that morning, including 51 minors, seven women and one man, who were sailing in an inflatable boat along the coast of the Strait of Gibraltar.

A spokesman for Salvamento Marítimo told Spanish news agency Europa Press that the ship was found around 9 am by a patrol from the Civil Guard, who informed them of the discovery and stayed with the patera until a rescue team arrived.

A boat belonging to the Spanish public institution went to the area and was back at around 10 am, after its crew was able to rescue the migrants onboard the patera. The boat should have arrived at the port of Algeciras at around 12.30, where the 59 people would receive necessary care, indicates Europa Press.
