Out of 149 countries ranked by the Harvard Business School in the latest edition of its «Social Progress Index», Morocco comes in the 82nd position with a score of 66.4 points out of 100.
Compared to the 2018 edition, the country has fallen by six places, previously ranked 76th in the world, based on the efficiency of its social services and access to basic human needs.
Indeed, the social progress index ranks countries according to their performances in several sub-indexes related to safety, personal freedom, water, sanitation and access to advanced education, among others. This index follows the principles created by Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz on how to better measure the well-being and quality of life of societies.
The ups and downs of social progress in Morocco
Regarding the main indicators, Morocco ranks 66th in terms of basic human needs, with a total of 84.15 points, with the best score being the one close to 100. Moreover, it is ranked 90th in the world on the second criterion where it gets 65.95 points and ends up in the 92nd position for the third one.
Shelter is one of the country's highest rated indicators, with a total of 93.40 out of 100. Nutrition and basic medical care are second with 87.66 points, water and hygiene follow with 81.17 points, ahead of the rating for access to information and communication (75.89 points) and personal safety (74.36 points).
As for Morocco’s lowest component scores, Morocco scores 59.26 in terms of environmental quality, 56.22 in health and wellness and 62.14 in personal freedom and choice. Morocco scored the worst when it comes to access to advanced education (31.92), and inclusiveness (35.32).
In the Arab world, Tunisia is ranked first with an overall score of 72.33 points. In the region, it is followed by the United Arab Emirates 61st, Jordan 63rd, Qatar 64th, Oman 66th, Algeria 79th while Morocco is ranked 82nd.
