French-Moroccan footballer Mehdi Benatia announced, Tuesday, that he is putting an end to his international career.
The 32-year-old player, who has been a usual member of Morocco’s squad since the start of his international career, told BeIN sport that he is «retiring». «I spoke to coach Vahid Halilhodzic ten days ago and I informed him that I will retire from international duty», he said.
«I spent 11 years with the national team and I did my best with them. Playing for your country is a great honor and I am satisfied with my performance during the past 11 years».
«But it is painful to hear someone saying Benatia is the one who picks the players of the national team and chooses the matches to play», he argued.
Currently playing with Al-Duhail, a Qatari football club, Benatia started his career with Marseille in 2003. He played for big clubs in Europe, including Roma, Bayer Munich and Juventus. He made 60 appearances with the Atlas Lions.
