Marrakech is one of the cities that will host the 2019-20 Formula E season, replacing Hong Kong. The Chinese special administrative region was forced to drop from the competition because of a series of «violent protests», Grand Prix 247 reports.

Published Friday, a list that includes the competition’s schedule did not explain why Hong Kong was abandoned. However, a South China Morning Post article revealed that the decision was taken because of «major events currently taking place in the city».

«The recent social unrest put a big question mark on the possibility of starting the event in March», Edward Yu, governor of the Hong Kong Automobile Association, said. «If something were to happen on the day of the event because of social unrest, and they cannot start, it will be a big loss», he added.

For the record, the Marrakech stage of the competition will take place on February 29, 2020.
