The Mauritanian government plans to appoint a new ambassador to Rabat to replace Mohamed Ould Abbaye, who was appointed on September 18 as a chargé de mission for the country’s presidency.

Nouakchott has reportedly proposed three candidates to Rabat. The list includes the name of the former Mauritanian Prime Minister, Yahya Ould Hademine, who held this position under the presidency of Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz from August 21, 2014 to October 30, 2018, the former Interior Minister Ahmedou Ould Abdellah and the current ambassador of Mauritania to Senegal.

The ball is in Morocco’s court now, as the country has to choose between the three names. Morocco is also entitled to refuse the three names and propose new ones.

Submitting this list to Morocco shows that Mauritania is determined to strengthen diplomatic ties with Morocco.
