The head of the terrorist group «Islamic State» (IS), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reportedly targeted by a US military operation in northwestern Syria in which he was reportedly killed, wrote Agence France-Presse (AFP), quoting US media.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), which has an extensive network of sources on the ground, American commandos were helicoptered and landed overnight in the Idleb region where there were «groups close to IS».

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, US television channels CNN and ABC reported on this raid against Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, considered responsible for multiple attacks around the world.

According to CNN, tests are underway to confirm the death of the leader of the jihadist group that allegedly exploded his explosive-laden jacket to commit suicide at the time of the raid. The US president «is scheduled to make a major announcement Sunday at 9 a.m. ET», said Hogan Gidley, spokesman for the US executive, without further details.

Shortly before the announcement, Donald Trump posted a message on Twitter, saying «something very big has just happened».

As the US military operation has been successful, it has been the most important mission aimed against a top jihadist leader since the death of Osama bin Laden, leader of Al Qaeda killed by the special forces in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, AFP recalls.

The latest appearance of al-Baghdadi goes back to a propaganda video of April 29th where he calls his followers to continue the fight. He appeared there for the first time in five years and promised that his organization would «avenge» the death of Daesh jihadists. His only known public appearance dates from July 2014 at al-Nouri mosque in Mosul, Iraq.
