The Polisario leadership announced, Monday, that it is hosting its 15th congress, scheduled from 19 to 23 December, in Tifariti. For the first time in six years, the Front is returning to the area located east of the Moroccan sand wall.
Indeed, the «Dakhla camp» in Tindouf was home in the previous years to the 14th and 13th congresses of the Polisario Front.
However, the Front’s announcement is seen as challenging move for the United Nations. In resolution 2440, adopted on 31 October 2018, the UN Security Council urged the Polisario to «adhere fully to its commitments to the Personal Envoy in respect of Bir Lahlou, Tifariti and the buffer strip at Guerguerat».
The Front responded to this call, promising former UN personal envoy Horst Kohler to stop its activities in the three localities.
