A new Netflix series is facing backlash for telling the story of the «Messiah» and portraying him as a «prophet» that leads 2,000 Palestinians into Israel, wrote French news agency AFP.

More than 3,500 denouncing the series signed a petition launched on Change.org, indicating that it is «evil» and that it enhances «anti-Islamic propaganda».

«Messiah», which will be released on January 1, tells the story of a young man in Syria. The man claims to be sent to Earth by his father. Like Jesus Christ, the man will perform miracles around the world and will be investigated by the CIA.

Reacting to the backlash, the series creator Michael Petroni said Netflix was «nervous» when he first presented his series. «Yes, it's provocative - the show is provocative. But provocative isn't offensive», he argued.

«It's not like I'm welcoming backlash (…) We expect that there's going to be a lot of noise around the show, and a lot of debate. I'm hoping for debate», he added.

On Twitter, Muslim viewers criticized the series for «predictability and inauthentic representation of Islam», explained AFP. For the record, «Messiah» was shot in Jordan and the United States.
