The Speaker of the House of Representatives Habib El Malki received, Monday in Rabat, Nkosiakhe Amos Masondo, the chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (Upper House) of South Africa.
This is the first high-level meeting that brings the two representatives together since the election of Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa.
During this meeting, Habib El Malki recalled Morocco’s support for ANC and Nelson Mandela during his fight against the apartheid regime. The official also stressed that Morocco «doesn’t interfere in the internal affairs of other states», referring to Pretoria’s support for the Polisario.
El Malki indicated that Morocco wants to «strengthen ties with South Africa». For the record, Habib El Malki had met Baleka Mbete, the former president of the Lower House of South Africa, in October 2018 in Rabat.
