As of Friday evening, Morocco recorded 281 new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 2,564, said the Head of the Directorate of Epidemiology and the fight against infectious diseases at the Health Ministry, Mohamed Lyoubi, during a daily press briefing.

«172 of these new ones were registered in the place of contamination relating to industrial and commercial units». The official explained that 142 additional cases were registered in Marrakech and 19 new ones were identified in Fez. Furthermore, it is also indicated that new smaller outbreaks of contamination have been detected in Nador and Tangier, while no new cases have been recorded in Casablanca.

«The increase in cases is thus explained by these new sources of contamination, which has given a relative change in the distribution by region», he added, explaining that the Marrakech-Safi region is now approaching that of Casablanca-Settat, in terms of number of contaminated cases.

The official also announced that 5 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, leaving the total number at 135 victims. As for recoveries, Morocco recorded 32 new ones, bringing the total number to 281.

Lyoubi also said that mild and asymptomatic cases continue to increase and that there is a decline in severe and critical cases: «asymptomatic cases go from 13% to 17%, while severe or critical cases fall from 14% to 9%». The health official also noted the improvement in the state of health of patients admitted to intensive care: «their percentage is declining slightly but steadily», he added, citing the example of «the recovery of a person who was in intensive care with respiratory assistance, yesterday at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca».
