Coronavirus lockdown getting less respected in Morocco

While extending the state of health emergency beyond May 20 may still be considered in Morocco, the lockdown is getting looser in several cities.

From people going out to play football to others roaming the streets without wearing masks, life seems to return to normal way before the official end of the lockdown.

Many photos and videos on social media, especially during Ramadan, show how people leave their houses and go on about their days or engage in outdoor activities in a normal way. Many people of all ages and without masks, were filmed in a park in Fez playing a football match, working out or stretching outdoors, and even cutting each other’s hair.

Other residents come to the park for a walk with their children, without taking into account the sanitary recommendations. Similar videos were shot in Casablanca and Agadir.

On Sunday, May 10, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases has exceeded 6,000, with the Casablanca-Settat, Marrakech-Safi, Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Fez-Meknes regions housing most of the cases.
