Twenty-three British citizens were returned to their homes in Gibraltar on Friday after they had been left stranded in Morocco for weeks over the coronavirus lockdown. According to The Express, the group was transported by two specially commissioned vessels.

The repatriation operation is the result of lengthy negotiations with the Moroccan Interior Ministry, the same source revealed, adding that they began once Morocco closed its borders back in March.

«We have had Gibraltarians stranded all around the world and we have managed to assist most of them to return home», Tito Danino, civil contingencies officer, said. «The largest stranded group was in Morocco and in the first few days we managed to get some across from Ceuta», he added.

38 other British nationals are still stranded in Morocco, awaiting repatriation, the same source said. «Some of those who remain in the country had originally planned to fly to Gibraltar on the scheduled service from Casablanca or Tangier but these flights were cancelled», the same source concluded.
