Coronavirus : Morocco records 137 new cases, 6,418 in total

As of Tuesday, May 12, Morocco recorded 137 new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 6,418.

Most of the new cases have been recorded in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region. «Cases have been detected, to a lesser extent, in the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Marrakech-Safi and Fez-Meknes», Mohamed Lyoubi, head of the epidemiology department at the Health Ministry said during the daily press briefing.

The official said that 89% (121) of these new cases were in close contact with previously confirmed cases.

Mohamed Lyoubi said that laboratory tests have excluded 2,698 suspected cases that turned out to be negative, bringing the number of suspected cases dismissed since the start of the pandemic to 65,397. 

During the last 24 hours, no deaths have been recorded, with the total number coronavirus-related deaths standing at 188. Hence, the fatality rate dropped to 2.9%.

Morocco also recorded 180 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,991 cases. Thus, the recovery rate reached 46.6%.

«Young people are increasingly being exposed to the virus and therefore they are the ones who do not respect the lockdown», concluded the health official.
