Morocco records 82 new coronavirus cases, discovers new hotspots in Marrakech and Tangier

As of Monday, May 18, Morocco recorded 82 new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 6,952.

Almost 87% (71) of the new cases were in close contact with previously confirmed ones, Mohamed Lyoubi, head of the epidemiology department at the Ministry of Health, said during the daily press briefing.

The majority of these new cases were identified in the region of Casablanca-Settat, mainly in Casablanca, where the three hotspots were discovered yesterday. 

The new cases have also been recorded in Marrakech-Safi, where a «small hotpost has been discovered», the health official said.

The death toll stands at 192 dead since the start of the pandemic. As a result, the case fatality rate is at 2.8%. 98 new recoveries were confirmed in Morocco, bringing the total number of recoveries 3,758.
