As of Friday, May 22, 121 new coronavirus cases were recorded in Morocco, bringing the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 7,332.

One death was recorded during the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 197. During the same period, 97 new recoveries were recorded in Morocco, bringing the total number of recoveries to 4,377.

85% (102) of the new cases recorded between Thursday and Friday were in close contact with previously confirmed cases, said Mohamed Lyoubi, head of the epidemiology department at the Ministry of Health, during the daily press briefing.

The majority of these new cases were discovered in industrial units in the Casablanca-Settat region. The region alone has registered 88 new cases. It is followed by the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.

The official addressed the reproduction number (R0) of the virus in Morocco, explaining that although its stands at 0.81 nationally, there are geographic disparities given the new cases.

The R0 in Casablanca is at 1.11 while it is at 0.92 in Marrakech-Safi, 0.89 in Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima. «There are regions where the R0 is below 0.7, but because of new cases, this rate may increase, as was the case for the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region», Mohamed Lyoubi added.
