Reacting to Yabiladi’s article on financial aid granted to consulates and embassies around the world to assist Moroccans stranded abroad, a well-informed source said that on March 14 the Foreign Affairs ministry set up a central crisis cell in Rabat to assist the work of 155 other crisis cells around the world.

In addition to making a list of all stranded Moroccans, the same source recalled that consulates and embassies have provided logistical, health and financial support to 6,979 Moroccan nationals.

The assistance is provided on an equal basis, the same source stressed. Aid is only granted within the framework of a reasoned management with suitable accommodation fees. Any special request that does not fall within this framework is rejected.

Aid financed through a dedicated fund

More generally, as far as the budget is concerned, this is a dedicated fund entitled «Rescue for nationals and repatriation» which is mobilized according to needs. Chancellery representation costs are not used for aid purposes, our source specifies.

Budgets are granted every trimester to diplomatic representations abroad and they are published on the Kingdom’s official bulletin. However, additional funds are granted to embassies and consulates in need.

Finally, aid requests are managed locally at the level of heads of missions, with a delegation of credit to deal with the most urgent cases.
