The Central Office for Combating Terrorism in Germany announced Monday the arrest of an individual who had been threatening over the internet to carry out an attack on Muslims inspired by the Christchurch attacks in New Zealand.

The 21-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in Hildesheim (Lower Saxony), the Office said in a statement, adding that weapons, which «may have been purchased to carry out his plans for attack» have been discovered at his home.

The arrestee had announced during an online discussion that he was preparing an attack on Muslims, inspired by the one committed in March 2019 in Christchurch, in which 51 people were killed in two places of worship.

According to the Central Counterterrorism Office, the suspect «intended to act in the same way», noting that police investigators also found «far-right files on his electronic devices».

To the German authorities, far-right terrorism is considered the number 1 threat to the security of the country.
