The 2020 edition of the Environmental Performance Index (PPE) ranks Morocco 100th out of 180 countries, with 42.3 points out of 100. The ranking, published on World Environment Day, is conducted by the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the Center for International Earth Sciences Information Network of the Earth Institute at Columbia University.
The Environmental Performance Index provides a summary based on data from the state of sustainability around the world. In its assessment of the environmental status of countries, it is based on two basic indicators : environmental health and the vitality of ecosystems, which are divided into a set of sub-indicators.
Thus, Morocco ranks 112th in the environmental health index with a score of 33.3, 138th with 27 points for air quality and 107th in water and sanitation sub-index with 40.8 points. The Kingdom ranks 161st with 39.6 points for the management of heavy metals, but does better in terms of waste management, ranking at the 81st place worldwide with 39.6 points.
Regarding the ecosystem vitality index, defined on the basis of several sub-indices, Morocco is positioned 73rd with 48 points. The Kingdom is 68th for the biodiversity sub-index, 64th compared to the ecosystem services index, 38th for fishing, 99th for climate change, 53rd for pollution emissions and 80th for the treatment of water resources.
Morocco is better at protecting biodiversity and habitats
For the report's authors, «performance in protecting and improving the vitality of ecosystems reveals both stubborn gains and challenges». Thus, they believe that Morocco, alongside the United Arab Emirates, Croatia, and Kuwait, has «considerably improved» its score in PEI 2020 thanks to its «better protection of biodiversity and habitats».
In the Middle East and North Africa region, Morocco is not doing better than its Arab neighbors. it comes in the 10th place, behind the United Arab Emirates (42nd world place), Kuwait (47th), Jordan (48th), Bahrain (56th), Tunisia (71st), Lebanon (78th), Algeria (84th), Saudi Arabia (90th) and Egypt (94th).
Overall, Denmark ranks first in the world, followed by Luxembourg, Switzerland third, Great Britain, France and Australia, while Guinea, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Liberia are at the bottom of the ranking.
The report also returns to a number of striking conclusions that emerge from its ranking. Good political results are associated with wealth (GDP per capita), while the pursuit of economic prosperity - which manifests itself in industrialization and urbanization - often means more pollution.
