After it announced that it is extending the state of health emergence by one month, Morocco revealed its plan for easing restrictive measures imposed to curb coronavirus infections. On Tuesday night, the Interior and Health ministries issued a joint statement explaining that the gradual relaxation of the lockdown will take into account disparities in the infection rate between Moroccan regions.

Hence, authorities divided Morocco into two major zones : 1 and 2. The first zone will see a significant yet gradual relaxation of measures. The inhabitants of the zone 1 will be able to freely go outside without having to carry a special authorization and will also be allowed to travel within the territorial province where they live.

Commercial activities will also be partially resumed in this zone, with hairdressing and beauty salons opening their doors. Inhabitants will also be allowed to partake in activities outdoors in public spaces and parks.

Zone 2, strict measures

On the other hand, the second zone, which includes provinces and cities that house most of the country’s infections, such as Casablanca, will continue to observe a strict lockdown. Inhabitants are still obliged to carry special authorizations when outside and shops will have to close their doors by 8 pm.

Apart from these restrictions, regions within this zone will see economic activities gradually resume. Shops, markets and transportation means will start operating in a partial way.

The joint statement from the Ministries of Interior and Health maintains the ban on cafés and restaurants, preventing them from receiving clients on site. Public baths, cinemas and theaters throughout the country will also have to wait. The measures also still forbid gatherings, meetings and wedding ceremonies throughout the whole country.
