Moroccans who are still stranded in Algeciras observed a sit-in, Thursday, before the Moroccan consulate to protest against a decision that prevented their repatriation. Well-informed sources told Yabiladi, that these nationals refused to leave their Morocco-registered vehicles behind to return home via the flights chartered by Rabat to repatriate Moroccans stranded in southern Spain.
Calling for a solution to their problem, said Moroccan nationals refused to leave their cars parked in Algeciras. They also explain that the parking lot fees would be expensive, while recalling that their visas will expire in the coming months.
A source within the Moroccan consulate in Algeciras told Yabiladi, Friday, that the Moroccans who refused to return to the Kingdom via the chartered flights wouldn’t benefit from aid attributed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
«The ministry sent its directives to the consulate on Wednesday to suspend accommodation and aid given to those who refused to leave on flights on Wednesday and leave their cars in Spain», the same source added. The same source indicates that the ministry, seized by the consulate after the sit-in organized on Thursday, has backtracked on its decision. «This morning, we received orders» canceling the first decision, the same source said.
Moroccans stranded in Algeciras to be assisted
Contacted by Yabiladi, the consul general of the Kingdom of Morocco in Algeciras, Mohamed Rafaoui also said that the matter was closed. «The ministry will continue to house and assist the Moroccans who have already benefited from help», he said. «The repatriation operation which took place on Wednesday by air has benefited nearly 25% of people stranded in the region which depends on the consulate», he added.
Mohamed Rafaoui also confirmed that he «proposed to Moroccans who are in southern Spain with their vehicles registered in Morocco to leave them in Spain», which was «accepted by some and refused by others».
«There are 750 to 760 Moroccans registered in the lists established by the consulate. In total, only 240 Moroccans were repatriated on Wednesday. About 80 people remain with vehicles, between 30 and 40 families, who are taken care of», he explained.
One of the Moroccans repatriated from Malaga confirmed to Yabiladi that Covid-19 tests carried out Wednesday, were all «negative». These Moroccan nationals are accommodated in hotels in the M'diq-Fnideq region and they are expected to leave quarantine in 9 days.
