Grouping Covid-19 cases decision is more of a relief to «citizens than health workers»

Earlier this month, Morocco has decided to transfer all Covid-19 patients to two health facilities in Ben Guerir, near Marrakech, and Benslimane, near Casablanca. The decision is reassuring and relieving to citizens more than health workers, according to Dr Al Mountadar El Alaoui from the Independent Union of Public Sector Physicians (SIMSP).

The Health and Interior Ministries have recently announced that all Covid-19 patients and even future ones will be grouped in two health facilities. What do you think of this decision?

It is a sovereign decision of the Ministry of Health and the public authorities overseeing the management of this pandemic. We have no objection, especially since the objectives of this decision are clear : to help ease the lockdown measures and to slowly but surely have life get back to normal again. Activities must be resumed and hospitals must fulfill their missions, because 90% of their capacities have been mobilized against the new coronavirus. Only 10% of the staff and efforts went to
other diseases.

With this new decision, I think that the roles will be reversed, and 10% of the workforce will continue their work of monitoring the epidemiological situation. Personally, I think this is a positive decision, because Moroccans would want to resume checkups and go to hospitals for treatment.

Will this decision also benefit doctors in the public sector ?

I think the decision will be a relief for citizens more than health workers. While Moroccans are expected to feel safer and more reassured when going to hospitals, doctors on the other hand will always have to remain vigilant because there is always a risk of infection.

Doctors, aware of this risk, will not necessarily be relieved because with or without Covid-19, they always have this concern of disinfecting certain services and especially protect themselves and citizens.

We must all continue to be vigilant, because the danger is always present and we must follow the decisions issued by the health authorities.

Moreover, for more than three months, there have been directives to exclusively focus on the fight against Covid-19. Even appointments and surgeries, deemed not urgent, have been postponed sine die.

Now, with the new decision, doctors will focus more on their other patients and the postponed activities. They will continue to answer the call of duty and thus fulfill their missions within hospitals.

The union has advocated for the benefit of doctors in the public sector, as in other sectors. What are the arguments for this measure?

Since the beginning of this pandemic, we have put aside our differences with the ministry in an attempt to join the battle against Covid-19. We have certainly not been consulted since the start of this pandemic but we supported the decisions issued by the ministry during this period.

Not all doctors are mobilized to fight Covid-19. There are those mobilized in the context of direct control, who carry out tests and administer treatments, but there are also those who work in health care centers and are consulted for other illnesses.

As a result, they are also in direct contact with citizens and thus present a risk of catching the virus. That’s why we called the ministry to have all doctors undertake Covid-19 tests.
