Moroccan Islamist association Al Adl wal Ihsane has urged the Moroccan authorities to reopen mosques, closed since the eruption of the coronavirus health crisis. In an article published on its website, the association denounced maintaining the closure of mosques in the Kingdom, accusing officials of «not having carried proper field studies to determine the role played by mosques».

«Unfortunately, the Superior Council of Ulemas insists on a single jurisprudential basis, which refers to the health damage opening mosques could have, without taking into account the renewable data and the current epidemiological situation in the country», Al Adl wal Ihsane argued.

The movement also claimed that this body was not inspired by «the civilized way of opening mosques in other countries». «Even non-Muslim countries have found a balance between the safety of worshipers and spiritual security», it added.

To the movement, the religious authorities in the Kingdom «do not lack material and human resources», to open the places of worship. A decision which «must be evaluated regularly by the authorities», it insisted.

The Justice and Development party wants to ask Ahmed Taoufik

The reaction of the movement led by Mohamed Abbadi came on the same day as that of the Justice and Development party. The latter’s parliamentary group seized, Wednesday, Ahmed Taoufik, minister of Habous and Islamic affairs, on the measures prepared by his department for the reopening of mosques.

In a letter addressed to the President of the House of Representatives, PJD MPs asked to speak during the session of Monday July 6, devoted to oral questions.

«Morocco has taken many precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus», wrote the parliamentarians, recalling that «various vital sectors have resumed their activities», that the epidemiological situation has improved and that the public authorities have taken numerous measures to lift the restrictions.

The Superior Council of Ulemas in Morocco «had previously confirmed in its declaration published on June 10, 2020 that the reopening of the mosques will take place in due time, in full coordination with the Ministry of Health and the competent authorities, taking into account the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the country». «The council had stressed that the temporary closure of mosques will be lifted when the health situation in the country returns to its normal state», MPs said.

Calls for reopening mosques, closed to fight the spread of the new coronavirus in Morocco, have multiplied these days, with voices denouncing the closure. Tuesday, in Larache, a demonstration took place to denounce the closure and call for a rapid decision.
