Nearly 1,200 people, mostly women, gathered Sunday in Brussels to protest against a ruling by Belgium’s Constitutional Court that a ban on headscarves in higher education is permissible, Belga reports.
Protestors gathered in Mont des Arts square, in central Brussels, carrying banners and slogans such as «living together is not just a slogan».
For the record, the Belgian Constitutional Court ruled in June that the ban on headscarves does not violate the constitution nor the European Convention on Human Rights.
The case was then referred to the Constitutional Court after Muslim students filed a lawsuit against the Francisco Ferrer Brussels University College, which banned all religious symbols, including hijab.
Meanwhile in Belgium, 12 universities said that they would not implement the ban.
