Less than two weeks after expressing on France24, his country's concerns about the military barracks Morocco is planning to build in Jerada, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune addressed on Monday the same subject.
«There has always been a verbal and political escalation between our countries. But our peoples are brothers and they look alike», he told French newspaper L'Opinion.
Asked about «new signs of tension between Algeria and Morocco», the president stressed that the two countries have «a long common history» and are «neighbors». «We are condemned to live together», he added before accusing «Moroccan brothers» of having problems with Algeria and of not being focused on the development of the Kingdom.
Addressing the same topic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that «the construction of military barracks near the border with Algeria is a form of escalation which must stop».
The Algerian president also addressed the Western Sahara question, saying that for Morocco, «the Saharawi Arab Republic is too much on the international stage». «It is up to them to initiate a dialogue with the Polisario. If the Saharawis accept their proposals, we will applaud it», he added, before depicting Algeria as an engaged country supporting «independence movements» and «people's rights to express their demands».
A statement that confirms Algeria's concerns
This new interview is granted less than two weeks after Algerian president referred to «another form of escalation», hitherto «verbal», with Morocco, referring to the project of military barracks that the Kingdom intends to build near Jerada, 38 km from its border with Algeria.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune also refused to «confirm or deny» the intention of his country to build in turn a military base at the same border. The information was shared by Algerian media close to the military and intelligence services which thus evoked the «principle of reciprocity» after the announcement made by the Kingdom.
In its May 21 edition, the Kingdom's Official Bulletin published an expropriation decree, on the grounds of «public interest», of a 23-hectare land, located in the Ben Ali forest, located in the municipality of Laaouinate in Jerada, for the benefit of the National Defense Administration. A military source had told Yabiladi that the army intends to build military barracks on the land.
