While their mission was supposed to last six months, Moroccan peacekeepers in Ituri stayed longer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) due to Covid-19 restrictions, wrote MONUSCO, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Thus, «special rotations are modestly being organized for their repatriation to Agadir, Morocco», reported the UN mission on its Facebook page.
«It is a feeling of pride and joy that we have today as we are preparing to go back home and meet our friends and families again in Morocco, especially after spending 5 additional months in very difficult conditions, due in particular to the Covid-19 and the worrisome security situation in Djugu and Irumu, the two territories of the Ituri province in our intervention area», said the Head of the Ituri-based Moroccan contingent of MONUSCO, Colonel Mohammed Elouizi.
«We are very proud to have served under the flag of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the DRC», he added.
For the record, the battalion forming the Moroccan contingent deployed in the DRC was decorated, during a ceremony organized in June in Kananga, with medals of merit awarded by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC, for its commendable services rendered within the mission.
