The King's prosecutor at the court of first instance in Souk El Arbaa decided on Wednesday to prosecute some of the persons in charge of the management of the red fruit production units in Lalla Mimouna, following the appearance of a coronavirus hotspot in June.

In a press release sent to Yabiladi, the prosecutor explains that this decision is made on the basis of the results of a judicial inquiry ordered by the prosecution to investigate the circumstances and the causes of the appearance of said hotspot.

The inquiry revealed «a suspicion of non-compliance with the preventive measures decided by the public authorities to limit the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of people», the statement continued.

The King's prosecutor adds that some officials responsible for transporting workers will also be prosecuted. Together with the heads of the units, they are accused of «violating the provisions of article 4 of the decree-law on the state of health emergency». They will thus be «summoned to appear in court to be tried in accordance with the law», the statement concludes.

The opening of this investigation was decided at the end of June by the King's prosecutor at the Kenitra Court of Appeal and entrusted to the national brigade of the Royal Gendarmerie.

On June 19, screening tests carried out on workers in red fruit factories in Lalla Mimouna uncovered hundreds of coronavirus infections, which required the tightening of preventive measures in the provinces of Larache, Ouazzane and Kenitra.
