King Mohammed VI delivered, Thursday, a speech on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People during which he stressed the need of abiding by the preventive measures set to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus. He described the current epidemiological situation in the Kingdom as «difficult and unprecedented for all».

King Mohammed VI indicated that «unfortunately, due to several factors, the lifting of the lockdown has been accompanied by an exceptional increase in the number of infections».

«Indeed, some have confused the lifting of confinement with the end of the disease, while others have displayed an inadmissible carelessness and laxity. Some even deny the existence of the pandemic», the Sovereign argued.

«The disease is very real, and whomever says otherwise, harm themselves, their families and others», the King added.

A possible new lockdown

With the same token, the Sovereign recalled that «a large portion of the population does not respect the preventive health measures adopted by the public authorities, such as wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and using hygiene and sanitizing products».

Calling this behavior «irrational», the King stressed that «acting as a good citizen means above all caring for the health and safety of others», and «avoid being potentially a vector of contamination for others».

Referring to the rising numbers of infections and coronavirus-related deaths in the Kingdom, the Monarch announced that «this situation would imply, God forbid, a return to total confinement, and would risk causing significant psychological, social and economic repercussions».

«In my Speech to you today, My intention is not to blame you. Rather, I want to expressly share with you My apprehensions about a possible exponential increase in cases of contaminations and deaths», the King insisted.

Finally, King Mohammed VI ended his speech by stressing the need of «getting out of the current situation and meeting the challenge of combating the pandemic». «Everyone will have to observe civic, exemplary and responsible conduct», the Sovereign concluded.
