The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has released the numbers of migrant arrivals for the first seven months of 2020. Data showed that the number of irregular migrants who arrived in the European Union dropped by 15% compared to the same period last year.

According to Murcia Today, Frontex reports that the number of irregular migrants detected at Europe’s external borders had been increasing during the last three months.

Indeed, the Central and Western Mediterranean routes recorded twice as many arrivals in July than in June 2020.

In the Western Mediterranean route, the number of Algerians was seven times higher than a year ago. «Moroccans were the second most represented nationality on this route», Frontex reported.

Frontex also reports that «there were 1,500 illegal border crossings in the Western Mediterranean July, 84% more than in the previous month».

Despite the increase, the total for the first seven months of 2020 is less than half of the figure recorded during the same period last year.
