The Trump administration has launched its new plan to drum up support for its peace plan, days after the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic ties with Israel. The mission is entrusted to Mike Pompeo, who is currently touring the region and Jared Kushner.

The US Secretary of State visited Israel and is expected to fly to Sudan, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Meanwhile, Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law is expected to visit Morocco and Saudi Arabia in the coming days.

To normalize ties with Israel, Washington intends to bring them all together around the same table within the framework of a «regional peace summit», Israeli media reported. According to the same sources, Morocco, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Chad have confirmed participation. However, the Palestinian Authority declined the invitation. Worse, Mahmoud Abbas refused to receive Mike Pompeo in Ramallah, the same sources added.

Morocco always ready

Morocco, for its part, has not missed any international initiative bearing the signature of the Trump administration in the Middle East. Rabat is also a founding member of the Warsaw Process, launched on February 14, 2019, on the occasion of the Ministerial Conference on Peace and Security in the Middle East. During this meeting, Morocco was represented by the Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs, Mohcine Jazouli, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led his country's delegation.

Morocco also took part in the work of the «Workshop on Peace and Prosperity», part of the «Deal of the Century», organized at the end of June 2019 in Manama.

A commitment that was confirmed at the beginning of March 2020 by hosting in Marrakech a session of the Warsaw Process devoted addressing insecurity in the Middle East. Israel was present at the meeting in the person of Dana Benvenisti-Gabay, who heads the regional security and counterterrorism directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sunday August 23, Prime Minister Saadeddine El Othmani affirmed loud and clear that «Morocco rejects any form of normalization with Israel» before making a U-turn, stressing that he spoke only on behalf of his party , the PJD, and not as head of government.
