Australian terrorist who killed 51 Muslim worshippers while they were praying at two mosques in Christchurch was sentenced, Thursday, to life imprisonment without parole. It is the first time that the country hands a similar sentence.
Brenton Tarrant had pleaded guilty to 51 charges of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one charge of committing a terrorist act in March 2019. He admitted during the start of his trial that he planned the attacks.
Delivering the sentence on Thursday, High Court Judge Cameron Mander told Tarrant that «his crimes are so wicked that even if you are detained until you die it will not exhaust the requirements of punishment and denunciation».
«As far as I can discern, you are empty of any empathy for your victims», she said.
For the record, Tarrant opened fire on Muslim worshippers on March 15, 2019 in New Zealand and livestreamed the heinous attacks on Facebook.
